Agent-based modelling

I'm currently working on the Simulating Urban Flows (surf) project. More info here.
In "surf", Nick Malleson and I are developing an agent-based model of the ambient population.
Specifically, we model daily flows of an urban population, currently applied to a part of the city of Leeds.

Cellular automata modelling of land-use changes

In my PhD project, I have contributed to the development of an activity-based CA model of land-use changes.
Rather than only simulating land use states for every cell, different "activities" (actually the population and employment in different economic sectors)
are simulated too to make the model more multifunctional.

The model is based on the models of land-use change developed by Roger White, Guy Engelen and Inge Uljee.

More information (in Dutch) on the RuimteModel website of VITO or in the excellent book Modeling Cities and Regions as Complex Systems. From Theory to Planning Applications.

During my time as a PhD student I worked both at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO).
